Choosing a storage yard

Can you drive up to it?

Hallways, lifts and trolleys turn a 10-minute job into an hour. Ground-level, drive-up units win every time for heavy or awkward gear.

When can you get in?

Ask the exact access hours. A gate that shuts at 6pm is useless to a tradie. Ours is 24/7 with your own code.

What is actually on camera?

Ask to see the camera coverage, not just the sign. Ask how long footage is kept.

What is the real price?

Admin fees, insurance add-ons, price rises after month three. Get the all-in weekly number in writing and ask when it changes.

Packing for storage

  1. Good boxes, same size. Uniform boxes stack straight and do not crush. Supermarket boxes collapse by month two.
  2. Heavy stuff in small boxes. Books, tools and crockery go in small boxes. Linen and pillows fill the big ones.
  3. Label three sides. Room and contents, on the side, not the top. You will stack them.
  4. Wrap the breakables twice. Paper then bubble wrap. Plates on their edge, not flat. Mirrors and pictures in flat cartons, standing up.
  5. Empty and dry every appliance. Defrost the fridge, drain the washing machine, and leave doors ajar so they do not go mouldy.
  6. Pallets or a tarp on the floor. Keep fabric and cardboard off the steel floor of a container, especially in Toowoomba winters.
  7. Aisle down the middle. Leave a walkway to the back so the thing you need in week three is not the thing you buried first.
  8. Photograph it before you shut the door. Thirty seconds now saves an argument with the insurer later.

What you cannot store

The same rules as every yard in Australia, and they exist to protect your neighbours' gear as much as ours:

  • Fuel, gas bottles, paint thinners, solvents, aerosols, fireworks
  • Lithium-ion batteries and anything with one inside (e-bikes, scooters, power tool batteries)
  • Food, plants, animals, anything that rots or attracts pests
  • Tyres in bulk, asbestos, chemicals, fertiliser
  • Anything stolen, illegal or that you would not want on camera
  • Cash, jewellery and irreplaceable documents belong in a safe, not a shed

Moving checklist

Two weeks out

  • Book the container and the trailer or truck
  • Boxes, tape, marker, bubble wrap
  • Start with the rooms you use least

Moving week

  • Defrost the fridge two days before
  • Pack a "first night" box and keep it in the car
  • Photograph everything valuable

Moving day

  • Heavy and big at the back, boxes in front
  • Aisle down the middle
  • Padlock on, photo of the locked door

After

  • Set a reminder to visit and check in month one
  • Update your address for the important mail
  • Tell us if your phone number changes
